Lady Ishbel Aberdeen was the main creator of the National Council of Women in Canada and the groups very first president. One of the goals set by the NCWC was to become a "parliament of women" meaning they wished to have women's views be discussed and addressed by all members. Lady Aberdeen was also the Governor Generals wife in 1893, Lord Aberdeen, General John Campbell Hamilton-Gordon. 

Augusta Stowe-Gullen, co-founder of the society, was also impressively the very first woman the earn a medical degree in Canada. (Faculty of Medicine at Victoria University, Toronto) Her actions as well as other led to the opening of the Ontario Medical College for Women. Augusta was an active member of: 

  • Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons
  • the National Council of Women 
  • the Senate of the University of Toronto 
Stowe-Gullen was very involved in the community, she also helped her mother in the establishment of the Women's College Hospital. She was also elected a trustee in 1892 of the Toronto Board of Education. 

The Famous Five ( Emily Murphy, Irene Parlby, Nellie McClung, Loiuse Mckinney, Henrietta Edwards) were also active members of the group.
